Keen Technologies is pursuing AGI through a different path: embodied reinforcement learning, real-world interaction, and learning from actual consequences rather than relying solely on text-based statistical scaling. Led by John Carmack, whose career has been defined by identifying hard problems and building systems that actually work. Keen operates on a principle: stay small, think carefully, don’t waste time on fashionable shortcuts.
The identity is led by a custom wordmark, punctuated by a stylized cursor. The base text is set in Outfit. This is a geometric sans serif. Clean and easy to read as both a display and text font. The “K” terminals form a balanced arrow configuration. By breaking this from the vertical terminal, we get an angled bracket, commonly used in programming.
Subtle hand tooling gives each letter its own character without losing discipline. The shapes and spacing were balanced so the letters are the same ratio as the cursor. The aim is modernity with retro-tech credibility. Balanced letters where sharp meets smooth. Equally at home on a Tron poster, an Atari cartridge, or a NASA launch patch.
Next was building the brand color palette. Knowing the website will lean towards minimalism and code, we would need a range of graphic tones. This starts with the Binary (101010) Black. Accent colors are named after pop culture references, with a special callout to John’s history with a certain car company.
Most AI companies position their work as benefits and capabilities. Keen’s work—embodied learning, physical robotics, real-world constraints—demands a different framing: research questions, open problems, honest limitations. The website needed a visual system that could support that shift from “here’s what we offer” to “here’s what we’re investigating.” Modern Retro, minimal, sharp with fast-loading tools.
The design philosophy leans monochrome with terminal-like presentation. High contrast between type weight and size drives hierarchy. Monospace fonts (in technical specs, code references, and data displays) reinforce developer culture. Color is treated as ambient atmosphere, with a fractal background pattern creating visual depth without competing with content.
